ord terrace elementary School, Seaside, ca
In fall 2014, I took SPAN 301S. In this course, students have to work in any Spanish community organization for 30 hours. Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience.
I choose to volunteer at Ord Terrace Elementary School, located in Seaside. I volunteered at the ASA program (After School Academy) It was a great opportunity! I used to assist teachers with instructional responsibilities and help students with their homework. The majority of students are Latinos and they needed help in English because their parents do not speak English so they cannot help them.
I have learned to dedicate my time to help others, to be able to assist teachers, be responsible, help students with their academic assignments, and practice to speak Spanish with native speakers. Working at this organization enhanced my communication skills and cultural knowledge. I was not aware of the difficulties Hispanic kids face due the lack of speaking English so I was glad to be able to help them.
