Power point / Ling 392: NATURE OF LANGUAGE & LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
This course helped me deepen my knowledge and understanding of some of the main linguistics concepts that are part of the knowledge required to fulfill the outcomes of this MLO. That is, in this course, we learned how to analyze the structure of the words (morphology), the ways in which phrases and sentences are built (syntax), and the sound system of English and Spanish (phonology), all of which are part of the linguistic knowledge a student is expected to achieve in this MLO.
One of the works I did in this class (presented as follows), and that I feel synthesizes my understanding of the linguistic concepts I learned was a project in which I had to analyze the influence that a first language exercises over a late bilingual’s second language. In order to complete this activity, I interviewed a non-native speaker of English, and I analyzed the linguistic characteristics of his speech, focusing on those sounds that deviated from the native speaker norm, and trying to understand how the person’s native language interfered with his articulation.
